We are currently looking for a Director, Occupational Health and Safety.

YOUR MISSION

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the selected candidate will oversee initiatives to create a safe and healthy work environment for all employees and contractors. This key position encompasses the strategic and operational supervision of the Company’s health and safety activities, with a particular emphasis on operations and construction.

Your role will be to develop, implement and supervise occupational health and safety programs as per best standards in the industry. The position’s specific duties include the following:

Strategic leadership

  • With the management committee and our external partner, develop and implement a strategic vision for occupational health and safety (OHS) that is aligned with the organization’s overall objectives.
  • Lead the design, development, implementation, and ongoing review of effective OHS policies, prevention programs and procedures both for current operations (pilot and phase-1 demonstration plants) and for NMG’s major construction projects and operational readiness plans for its subsequent commercial-phase activities.
  • Work closely with the management team and operational and project teams to deploy initiatives that support the implementation of a positive OHS culture at the organization.

Project management

  • With the integrated construction management teams, lead the development of risk management and prevention programs for the organization’s construction projects.
  • Oversee the OHS management for the contractors and partners executing our construction projects; ensure compliance with regulatory standards and promote best practices in worksite safety.
  • Work with the engineering teams to ensure that OHS is fully incorporated into the design of NMG’s future operational facilities.

Operational management

  • Oversee day-to-day OHS activities at the demonstration operating sites and work closely with internal teams to identify risks, develop preventive and reactive action plans, and implement effective solutions.

Training

  • Lead the development of training programs for employees and subcontractors to promote a health and safety culture throughout the organization that is built on compassion, recognition and diligence.

Governance and reporting

  • Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) and monitor and publish these indicators on a regular basis.
  • Directly help create and develop the OHS component of an integrated management system that is part of NMG’s ESG approach.
  • Conduct regular audits to assess OHS performance and issue recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies and external stakeholders.

YOUR SKILLS PROFILE

  • University degree in a relevant field (civil engineering, industrial engineering, construction engineering, health and safety, etc.). Professional certification in OHS is an asset.
  • Significant experience in health and safety management, including multiple years in a management position.
  • Ideally, this experience will have been in a heavy industrial context and for major projects in industrial infrastructure construction.
  • In-depth knowledge of OHS laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the applicable integrated management systems and standards (such as ISO 45001).
  • Advanced project management, risk assessment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze risks and implement the appropriate preventive measures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with different stakeholders, including internal staff, contractors and regulatory bodies.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to engage and influence individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, with the ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Job status: Permanent, full time

Location: Montréal or hybrid. Expect to travel to the construction sites of the Saint-Michel-des-Saints and Bécancour projects.
